Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The Greater Rochester affiliate matches hundreds of youth up to age 21, with trained adult mentors. The rewards are immense for the mentors, their “mentees” and their families. The measurable results and impact from the one-to-one mentoring program indicate that at-risk youth are more likely to stay in school, avoid risky behaviors, have improved relationships with peers and adults, and have a greater likelihood of future success.
Conducting such an intensive and long-term mentoring program requires a stable annual budget, appropriate staffing, oversight, evaluation, and strong community partnerships. Big Brothers Big Sisters has worked with Grants4Good LLC to secure hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the necessary staffing to recruit mentors and youth, make the best possible mentoring matches, and support the program over the long term. Grants have also provided seed money for new programs and partnerships such as the Truancy Project with the Rochester City School District, that specifically recruits youth who are chronically truant and are at risk of dropping out of school and Beyond School Walls where youth and mentors explore work and career interests. It is through grants and other fundraising efforts that these high impact programs can exist free of charge to the families who need it most…and change the lives of at-risk youth for the better.
“Grants4Good has been pivotal in our success as an agency. For many years we supported our grant making internally; engaging with Margit has allowed the agency growth and sustainability. We have developed a number of new partners and supporters while increasing the support from existing grants. Margit’s skill and ability equal her wonderful personality.” – Tina Christiansen, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester
